Cappadocia Geological Heritage and Rock-Hewn Structures App. and Research Center

Mission and Vision

The Cappadocia region is an important heritage in both geological and cultural terms, and it is very crucial to pass the appreciated heritage to future generations without being damaged. On the other hand, Cappadocia is an important touristic spot for our country. It is one of the main missions of our application and research center to guide the protection of the region, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List and visited by many local and foreign tourists.

Although the Cappadocia region presents many geological and cultural beauties, there are also important geoengineering problems throughout the region. For instance, Cappadocia region is one of the most important regions in our country where rockfalls are densely observed. Furthermore, there exist numerous rock-hewn dwellings in Cappadocia both carved in the historical period and recently. Ignimbrite type rock masses surrounding these rock-hewn structures deteriorate and lose their original strength due to various factors such as precipitation, temperature variation and human activities. With the loss of primary physical as well as mechanical characteristics, instability problems are detected in these rock-hewn spaces. These instability problems occasionally cause loss of life and property and it emerges as an issue that remedial measures need to be taken. As our application and research center, one of our major goals is to reveal the stability problems and to develop engineering solutions for these rock-hewn structures, which are widely observed in the Cappadocia Region.

The faculty members constituting the board of directors of KAJEMKOY Application and Research Center have carried out many scientific researches in terms of both geological and geoengineering throughout the region. For this reason, our research center, which has a team that knows the geoengineering problems of the region well and has detailed information about the geological heritage characteristics of Cappadocia, is carrying out valuable scientific studies for the region and will continue to do so. On the other hand, considering the historical and touristic importance of the region, studies are carried out to provide technical guidance to public institutions and organizations and private companies working in the region. Finally, it is one of our most significant tasks to develop engineering projects for avoidable disasters by evaluating the engineering elements causing the disasters in the region where many areas are declared as disaster zone due to rockfalls and rock-hewn space collapses.
